Being in the industry I’m always asked by friends, colleagues and estranged family members if I can get them a nice cigar humidor that their wife won’t eventually banish to the corner of the garage. My go to humidor when I’m asked this question has been without a doubt the Montegue Cigar Humidor. Before I ever laid my eyes on this piece I’d sold 100’s of them online and finally got one into the cigar shop for a local doctor to pick up. I couldn’t believe the quality and choice of hardwoods that went into this humidor. From top to bottom the Montegue humidor just keeps on impressing.
Adapted from a drawing inspired by Artiste-Protégé Wilson Montoy, the Montegue starts with a parquet cherry wood design top featuring an alternating grain pattern and an inset maple border. The hardwood used throughout the humidor is a specially chosen distressed walnut with enough tiny bumps and bruises to give the feel that the humidor is 100 or so years old. These characteristics take the humidor away from being a snobbish piece of furniture to a classic conversation piece perfect for a sitting room or the game room. Another thing that really impressed me about the humidor was the quality of the hardware. Even the locking mechanism and hinges have an antique brass look that really sets the piece off. The locking mechanism is more than your standard “skeleton key” that most humidors come with. It comes with 2 keys and has a very smooth and secure locking mechanism to keep the kids and mooch friends out.
The capacity of the Montegue is rated at 1500 cigars which would be a tight fit. The top drawer comes with adjustable dividers creating 4 compartments which comfortably fits about 125 smokes and the bottom compartment will fit around 25 boxes with room to spare. I found it more than ample for the average cigar buff’s collection
The Montegue does require a small amount of assembly which consists of attaching the front feet and screwing the outlet into the back of the humidor. Be sure to pick up the Hydra Small Humidifier which fits perfectly between the spanish cedar shelves. The humidor is small enough that the optional fan kit for the Hydra isn’t necessary. This is one of the finest cigar humidors we’ve had on the shelves and I’d say rivals the likes of $1000+ humidors like the pendergast line with a bit more character added.
Pros: Beautiful hardwoods used throughout, upgraded hardware, internal outlet, unique antique finish.
Cons: Some (10 minute) assembly required, Heavy - requires UPS freight shipping.
